Research | "Sticks and Stones and: An Atlas of Heterogenous Constructions"

Ultramoderne | Providence, Rhode Island

Directed by Aaron Forrest, Yasmin Vobis, and Brett Schneider

Design Team: Evelyn Ehgotz, Zak Leazer, Diandra Rendradjaja, Wendy Zhuo

"Sticks and Stones and” was the year long research project of the architecture studio practice Ultramoderne. The project culminated in a public exhibition staged in the BEB Gallery of the Rhode Island School of Design. The design team was made up of designers from both RISD and Harvard GSD.

Through the analytical drawing of vernacular and industrial precedents from across the globe, we hoped to consider relationships between materials not often included in the narrow approach to conventional construction. By examining constructions from across geographies and times, we collected strategies useful for contemporary building methods (through large scale mockups) and moved away from the predilection for a single building material.
